1)  Steps

     A man starts from a given point. If each time that he takes two steps forward he must        take one backwards, how many steps will he have to take in order to reach a point five      steps ahead of his starting point?

     Why are manhole covers round?  Can you find 3 reasons why round is the best                  possible shape?

 

3)  Day of the Month

     If the eleventh day of the month falls on a Tuesday, what day of the week will the              30th be?

 

4)  Minutes

     If a clock is stopped for a minute every 10 minutes, how long will it take the minute            hand to complete a revolution?

 

5)  Age

     A mother is three times as old as her son. Ten years later she will be twice as old. How      old is the mother now?

 

6)  Percentage

     A:  10% of 90            B:  90% of 10      

     Which of these statements would you choose?

     A is greater than B                  B is greater than A              Neither

 

7)  Ice Cream

     A shop sells ice creams. Each ice cream has two scoops.

     The possible flavours are vanilla (V), strawberry (S), chocolate (C) and mint (M).

     The two scoops can be the same flavour or different flavours.

     How many different combinations of the ice cream are possible?

 

8)  Time

      The time in Rio is three hours behind London. The time in New York is five hours                 behind London.  What is the time in New York when it is 1.00am in Rio?

9)   Coins

       Two identical coins are placed side by side with the heads in normal orientation.

       If the coin on the right remains motionless and the coin on the left rolls around the            coin on the right, to reach the opposite side, will the figure on the rolling coin face              left, right or upside down?

10)  Tank

        It normally takes 30 minutes to fill a tank. If however, a hole allows one third of the             water being poured in to escape, how long will it take to fill the tank?
